Welcome to the ICARE-Nanomed website!

The ICARE-Nanomed Program, funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) through the Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program, aims to train a new generation of highly qualified personnel capable of characterizing nanoparticles and evaluating their interactions with biological environments for applications in nanomedicine.

This innovative program aims to build the capacity needed to address major challenges in nanoparticle commercialization, spanning nanoparticle synthesis, characterization, and preclinical experiments. Through an interdisciplinary approach, ICARENanomed offers specialized coursework, interactive workshops, industrial internships, and collaborative research projects. These activities equip participants with the essential skills and tools to advance the development of safe, effective nanomedicines—including vaccines, drug delivery systems, and radiosensitizers.

ICARE-Nanomed trains the next generation of scientists and engineers in nanoparticle characterization, stability, and interactions with biological environments, preparing highly qualified personnel to meet Canada’s growing need for expertise in nanomedicine.

Trainees participate in interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects spanning the full spectrum of nanoparticle characterization and analysis. They work with innovative platforms, including lipid-, polymer-, and metal-based nanoparticles, and explore areas ranging from physicochemical characterization to nanoparticle interactions with cells and tissues. Research applications include vaccines, drug delivery systems, medical imaging, and radiosensitizers.

The program combines specialized coursework, workshops, and seminars with hands-on industrial internships and training led by leading Canadian experts. Trainees gain practical experience with advanced instrumentation while developing professional skills and building connections with industry. They are also exposed to the translational aspects of nanomedicine, including regulatory approval processes, health research environments, and technology transfer.

Through this comprehensive training, ICARE-Nanomed prepares highly qualified personnel with the scientific, technical, and professional expertise needed to advance nanomedicine and strengthen Canada’s capacity in nanoparticle stability and biological interactions across industry, academia, and regulatory
